The Nigerian Army has confirmed the rescue of no fewer than 24 kidnap victims at Kabugu Lamba; an abandoned village in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State, North West Nigeria.
This was announced in a press statement released by Onyema Nwachukwu, Brigadier General, the Director of Army Public Relations, narrating that the victims, including a child, were rescued after a gun battle with terrorists in the community.
The statement reads: “Troops of 223 Battalion, operating under Sector 1 of Joint Task Force, North West Operations Hadarin Daji have in a rescue operation conducted in the early hours of 7 July 2023 rescued 24 kidnap victims, including a child, after a shootout with notorious bandits at Kabugu Lamba; an abandoned village in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara state, North West Nigeria. The gallant troops led by the Commanding Officer of the Battalion, stalked and swooped on the bandits, annihilating 4 of them in a ferocious firefight that ensued.
“The victims, including a minor, 9 females and 14 males have been extricated and evacuated from the kidnappers' hideout by the troops,” the statement added.
In June, the troops also deployed at Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State, rescued 10 kidnapped victims.
The troops rescued the victims while on a search and rescue operation.
It was learnt that the victims were abandoned by bandits when they noticed Nigerian Army troops approaching their hideouts.
Also, it was disclosed that the victims were kidnapped by the terrorists while working on their farmlands on June 6.
The rescued victims revealed that they were abandoned by the terrorists who ran away when they heard that troops were closing in on them.
Meanwhile, they were admitted to the General Hospital in Tsafe for treatment after which they were reunited with their families.
