Former Dutch goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar, 52, has suffered a brain haemorrhage and is in intensive care in stable condition, according to Ajax, where he played from 1990 to 1999.
Last June, the Dutch side dispensed with his services as general manager, a position he had held since 2016.
The former goalkeeper was in Croatia on holiday, according to Dutch journalist Mike Verweij, and was taken by helicopter to a hospital on Friday afternoon shortly after the incident and was admitted to intensive care, where he is in a stable condition according to the Eredivisie club's own information.
Manchester United, the club where he played between 2005 and 2011 and where he retired from elite football, have also sent a message of support on their social networks to the former goalkeeper, who made 186 appearances for the Red Devils and won the 2008/09 Champions League.
